Sprint has officially launched the entry-level Palm Pixi smartphone. The $100 device is powered by webOS and features a QWERTY keyboard along with a 2.6-inch multi-touch display.

The Pixi – which runs multiple applications simultaneously – also offers combined messaging, linked contacts, layered calendars and provides easy access to Palm’s App store.

A few days ago, Dell announced the limited release of its new venture into the smartphone arena.

Well, limited in that it won’t be available to Americans.

Dell will release the smartphone, dubbed the Dell Mini 3, only to China and Brazil.

But don’t worry. We’re not missing anything too exciting.

The Mini 3 cleverly lets Dell continue the naming convention it adopted when it came out with its netbook offerings, the Dell Mini 9 and Dell Mini 10.

The little smartphone, which runs the Google Android open-source smartphone operating system, appears rather underwhelming.
Underwhelming at least by iPhone and “the Perfect Storm” standards.

The Mini 3 seems unexciting because of some confusion about its specifications.

At first, according to an article in PCWorld, Dell said the phone would only be 2G compliant — vs. the new iPhone 3G — and would not support WiFi connectivity for quick Internet access when in WiFi hotspots.

Compared with the iPhone, a Dell Mini 3 without these features would not compete successfully.

The Mini 3 comes complete with a 3.5-inch touch screen and a 3.2-megapixel camera.

The touch screen matches that of the iPhone and the camera boasts a whopping 0.2 megapixel improvement over the iPhone, but the internal specifications of speed and performance pale in comparison to the Mini 3’s rivals. The Mini 3 appeared to have “lame” specifications, according to PCWorld.

So here is a dilemma.

Let’s imagine a hypothetical situation that involves Dell bringing the Mini 3 to the United States.

We must note that ComputerWorld and PCWorld both feel unsure whether Dell will bring the new smartphone to the United States.
If Dell decides to make this move, it can go one of two ways, as the specifications could cause the phone to fail immediately in the American market.

But those same specifications could come with a low price tag, and could thus find a niche in the discounted market.
People might buy the phone and deal with reduced performance for a quid pro quo reduction in cost.
So what is Dell likely to do?

For the moment, Dell will more than likely feel content with marketing to China and Brazil exclusively.

The smartphone markets in those two countries are not nearly as fierce as the market in the United States, where more people covet smartphones and more companies have the infrastructure support and marketing networks to provide them.

Dell would need to work hard in the United States and immediately compete with the entrenched smartphone products.
The cell phone company under whose service Dell attempts to release the Mini 3 will be able to give the Mini 3 a great deal of development attention.

According to PCWorld, China Mobile might already require the Mini 3 to gain 3G support if it has not already adopted it.

If Dell comes to the United States soon, it would do well to sell the phone at a good discount over its competitors, as it appears to require a great deal of research and development before it can successfully trounce the iPhone.

But the phone’s existence does affect its operating system.

ComputerWorld published an article describing the phone as a “small victory” for the Google Android operating system, even if it doesn’t get marketed to Americans directly.

The phone’s existence proves the viability of the Android operating system, and will thus make it more available for other manufacturers to develop smartphones that can run it effectively.

The more models of phones become available for Android, the more Android’s market share will likely increase.

The announcement of the Dell Mini 3 can only bring additional competition to the worldwide market, and it might begin to make the other manufacturers somewhat nervous.

The Mini 3 itself might not have the specifications to affect the smartphones already available to American consumers, but because Dell has interest, it might send chills throughout the market.

Thought the original HTC HD was a bit of beast? Then how about the spanking new HTC HD2. It has a massive 4.3-inch screen which makes the original 3.8-inch effort look paltry by comparison. But does this capacious Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone cut it against the very best phones out there? Read our HTC HD2 review now and find out.

Let’s cut straight to the chase. The HTC HD2 is the best Windows Mobile phone we’ve ever used. That’s not thanks to the OS hidden underneath the stunning HTC Sense skin last seen on the HTC Hero and HTC Tattoo, more down to the manner in which HTC has built this mobile from the ground up.

That 4.3-inch screen is nothing short of magnificent and dominates the HTC HD2. However, it’s never overpowering and really helps take this phone ahead of its competitors. See, this bad boy has a capacitive touchscreen with multitouch capabilities for zipping about web pages and snaps. It’s every bit as good as the iPhone and thanks to the size, this is one of the best browsing experiences we’ve ever had on-the-go. Admittedly Safari remains top dog, but this pushes it very close indeed.

The screen is also great for use as a satnav. While the 3.5-inch effort on the iPhone is just a tad too small, the HTC HD2 is perfect for GPS in your motor. We loaded it up with CoPilot Live 8 and didn’t miss the TomTom usually slapped on our dash. There’s a car kit available at extra cost. If you don’t have a satnav already, it’s well worth slapping down for.

Adding HTC Sense to the HTC HD2 is also a smart move. It means that Windows Mobile 6.5 is nicely hidden under a variety of clever homescreens we’ve been enamoured with ever since first playing with it on the HTC Hero. Getting instant access to Facebook and Twitter updates is ace and something we struggles without when we had to switch back to our bog-standard Nokia N85.

There’s no escaping the fact that Windows Mobile 6.5 is on board. While HTC has done well to skin it to within an inch of its life, it still throws up annoying menu systems which are only made easy to use thanks to the HTC HD2’s massive screen. If Android was on board, we can’t help but feel everything would run even smoother than it already does.

The Snapdragon processor should also keep things ticking along, but we noticed apps slowing down dramatically when they should have been moving at lick spit pace. And the camera, at 5 megapixels, could do with a bump.

These issues aside though, the HTC HD2 is still the best Windows Mobile 6.5 phone we’ve toyed with. The epic screen is fantasic and points to a time when all phones are this handy.

The Wi-Fi Alliance this morning announced that it is nearing completion of a new specification that will allow WiFi devices to connect to each other – devices such as mobile phones, cameras, printers, as well as devices such as keyboards and headphones – and that certification is expected to begin mid-next year.

I know. It sounds an awful lot like Bluetooth. But I suspect that this will be better.

The key here is that these devices will operate on a peer-to-peer basis, instead of linking to each other via the WiFi network. In a statement, WI-FI Alliance executive director Edgar Figueroa said:

Wi-Fi Direct represents a leap forward for our industry. Wi-Fi users worldwide will benefit from a single-technology solution to transfer content and share applications quickly and easily among devices, even when a Wi-Fi access point isn’t available. The impact is that Wi-Fi will become even more pervasive and useful for consumers and across the enterprise.

The new technology will support typical WiFi ranges, which are much greater than Bluetooth, and will be able to tackle bandwidth-hungry tasks, as well. My experiences with Bluetooth have been hit-or-miss – mostly using a mobile phone earpiece, connecting a wireless mouse and transferring files between my Blackberry and laptop.

Funny story: at a tech event recently, I shot a picture on my phone and wanted to upload it to my laptop so I could put it in a blog post. But when I asked my phone (and laptop) to find the other Bluetooth device, I came up with a list of more than a dozen devices within range. Having no idea which of those were mine, I scrapped the file-transfer and just did the photo upload later.

Seeing how WiFi has a broader range and this new specification would allow multiple devices to connect directly with a single device (like an office printer), I imagine the airwaves will become a bit cluttered by devices trying to find each other.

I guess it’s time to start thinking of some cool names for my devices so I can spot them when they’re lined up next to hundreds of others in a crowded office or conference setting.

Chalk up another win for Google in the 21st Century mobile phone war: Dell has announced its first foray into the cellphone market – and it will be with a mobile that runs on the search giant’s Android operating system.

Dell’s Android phone, featuring both a touchscreen and a keyboard, is expected next year on US carrier AT&T, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Dell is also talking to multiple other carriers.

In the PC market, Dell has always been closely tied to Google rival Microsoft.

HTC already has a Google Android based phone in the market (sold here by Vodafone; read review here), while LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola have Android-based models in the works.

While it still has a larger user-base, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile has yet to catch fire with customers or phone makers. This week’s local launch of Window Mobile 6.5 was backed by a single handset maker (LG), although an HTC model running 6.5 is promised in the New Year.

Both Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile are squaring off against Apple’s proprietary iPhone OS, and Nokia’s open-source, more old-school Symbian OS.

Dell and HP are also trialling a netbook version of Android – a precursor to Google’s full-blown Windows competitor, ChromeOS, due in 2010.

Delivering a revolutionary touch experience that will change the way you use your phone, forever. The HTC TouchTM Dual effortlessly combines an intuitive touch screen and keypad within a stunning design. The HTC Touch Dual, which we previously called the Touch Slide, is now official. It’s got the same front face as the HTC Touch, but is slightly thinner and has a slide-out keypad.

HTC has officially launched their HTC Touch Dual (as they now call it) for Europe. Once only known as the Nike, the Touch Dual now measures in at 107 x 55 x 15.8-mm / 120-grams (slightly different than its Japanese sib) and packs WCDMA/HSDPA 2100MHz and GSM/EDGE 900/1800/1900MHz radios. Of course, it brings the TouchFLO interface riding atop Windows Mobile 6 Professional and 2.6-inch QVGA touch-screen as you’d expect.

It’s 3.5G and has HSDPA connectivity, plus a 2 megapixel camera and the now classic HTC slide-out keyboard with a choice of 12 or 20 keys. 256MB memory is included on board but there’s a microSD card slot for expansion as well as Bluetooth 2.0 and touch-driven photo slideshow which sounds nothing like the iPhone whatsoever, honest guv. Orange have first dibs in late October with a £35 plan, with other networks getting in on the act weeks later.

Fujitsu executives unveiled the new Fujitsu F703i, which is now considered to be the world’s thinnest waterproof phone at just 17.9mm thick. Fujitsu heralds the F703i as not only just a waterproof phone, but a stylish and compact one, unlike its predecessors which were odd and bulky.

The Fujitsu F703i has been under development for three long years. They wanted to make sure that they could include all the essential functions that mobile phones have today, while making it completely waterproof.

The phone can be submerged in 1 meter depth of water, left there for 30 minutes, and then removed, and it will work as if nothing ever happened! You can even wash the phone off in a regular sink without causing it any harm. To demonstrate its waterproof efficiency, Fujitsu brought along a model and a bathtub, who demonstated the nice features of the waterproof F703i phone while bathing.

Fujitsu is hoping to introduce more stylish waterproof phones over the coming years, while cutting down its thickness to 13mm, 12mm, and even 11mm. The Fujitsu F703i phone will be available through NTT DoCoMo beginning next month.

Samsung may think that they’re super sexy with their uber thin cell phones, but Fujitsu has something that they don’t: a hot model lying in a bathtub with their new F703i, which they claim to be the world’s thinnest waterproof cell phone. Measuring just 17.9mm thick, this clamshell is “stylish and compact” and will be able survive a dip of 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes at a time. Any longer and it’ll get that shriveled raisin finger effect… or something.

With all this waterproof-ness, it means that if you happen to drop the F703i in the dirt or spill your dinner on it, you can just as easily walk over to the kitchen sink and give it a good rinse off. Technical specs were not released, but we do know that the Fujitsu F703i waterproof phone will be available through NTT DoCoMo next month. In the future, Fujitsu hopes to shave a few extra millimeters off the handset’s girth, possibly bringing that figure down as low as 11mm.

What da heck right? Yeah, what da heck, but that’s what fujitsu did at the press conference this morning, having the F703i phone ringing in the tub with a model, just to let the world know how important and beautiful it is to have a waterproof phone. “Moshi moshi!” We feel sorry for her- hopefully she’s paid well. Oh yeah, the phone can be washed over the tap, see? Apparently they’ve been developing this for 3 years, and managed to halve the thickness. Bravo.
